Analog to Digital

Picture

Greetings
Webson Ji, Creative Director, Li Tang

We are proud to announce the list of the selected artists that will take part in the international group exhibition Analog to Digital curated by OBITION and Li Tang. We received 218 artworks from all over the world and it was an incredibly difficult decision to narrow the list down to five artists. Thank you all for your participation and submissions.

Analog to Digital is the first collaboration international group exhibition by OBITION and Li Tang. We work together to share lights for artists and creatives. Please stay tuned for upcoming exhibitions and opportunities.
KK, Art Director, OBITION

We are delight to present the first group show of “obition”, Analog to Digital. The exhibition features a curated selection of innovative artists and works that highlight digital tool to broaden artistic perspectives during this historic era.

The central highlight of the exhibition is arguably one of the most important notions, “digital”, for contemporary artists. Many of the works in the exhibition have distinguished attributes based on use of digital tools. We are looking forward to welcoming you to the exhibition and sharing these exceptional pieces with you.

Paintscapes

Shan Shui Paintscape (G) from Thomas Valianatos on Vimeo.

Shan Shui Paintscape (B) from Thomas Valianatos on Vimeo.

“PAINTSCAPES” deals with CG landscapes based on fractal abstract painting. "Paintscapes" investigate J. Pollock's technique of dripping, digitize it in its micro-scale and promote it to a virtual three-dimensional landscape.
“Shan Shui Paintscape (G) art work refers to the traditional Chinese painting “Shan Shui” which depicts scenes of natural landscapes. Chinese "shan shui" paintings come to confirm the psychological concept of the landscape, as with their black and white inks and their semi-realistic style, they portray landscapes with intelligent painting implications of natural forms, with emphasis on psychological uptake and intellectual metaphor. Oswald (1956), Robert J. Maeda et al. (1970). The art works “Shan Shui Paintscape (G) & (B)” borrow narrative elements from the "Shan Shui" painting's philosophy, such as the paths leading to a thematic element and the viewer's psychological glance on the landscape and not the landscape itself.

Flying in a Paintscape from Thomas Valianatos on Vimeo.

The "Flying in a Paintscape" & "Landing in a Paintscape" (see here: vimeo.com/250583718) artworks are based on the trajectories and τhe switching of the virtual camera lens exploring the 3D painting landscape. They further explore the psychological concept of the landscape, where the aesthetics of nature are associated with evolutionary instincts on their intake, but also the use of environmental information, based on sight or shelter, based on the virtual camera following different trajectories and heights.

PaintScape, Gestalt In Chaos from Thomas Valianatos on Vimeo.

The video aims to present the different stages of Paintscapes’ production on a single "canvas". It emphasizes the aesthetics of fractal paintings based on their complexity. In the final impression of the project, the degree of visual complexity is very high, because the fractal dimension of these images is very high. (fractal dimension is a parameter of fractal complexity). These images were measured to have a fractal dimension close to 9, slightly higher than J. Pollock's paintings, when measured by R P. Taylor (1998-1999).
In a complex artistic experience, however, it would be simplistic to claim that the aesthetics of nature or fractals themselves generally collapse to a measurable size as expressed through the fractal dimension (complexity / roughness). After all, a descriptive and measurable quantitative picture of the thickening of the fractal pattern in the observer's frame does not exhaust the emotional and psychological experience of the latter in relation to the artistic image.
Statement
My audiovisual work (see here: https://vimeo.com/thomasvallianatos), is a hybrid artwork based on New Media and Audio-reactive Live Visuals. The aim of the projects is to create experimental 2d/3d graphics in real time, with various techniques and Artistic Media such as Generative Art, Music Visualization, Virtual Reality, Depth Cameras and Synthesizers. The art works, in their final form, are presented as live audiovisual performances, video screenings, digital prints and original drawings.
The problematic of the interaction between image and sound is dominant in the art work. It consists of audiovisual works that explore the possibilities of live video screening and real-time music visualization. Utilizing visual and audio data streams, weaves through video screening systems and abstract audiovisual patterns, (See here: https://vimeo.com/showcase/5073598 and here: https://vimeo.com/showcase/4536324), and proposes an experimental model for producing audiovisual events and spatial narrative. (See also here: https://vimeo.com/showcase/5847495). It focus on interactive reconstruction of image and the real-time video production, based on audio visual information or the visual quality of a live sound. The purpose of the whole work is to explore the transition / translation of the 2d/3d image to sound and vice versa and to create generative images in real time.

Compost n.1 from Citron | Lunardi on Vimeo.

Compost n.1 is a part of an artistic project that combine science, video art and digital sculpting and is ispirated by the recent studies of Donna Haraway on the concept of Chtulucene: not a post human world but a human compost world characterized by a continuous process of composition and decomposition.
This change of perspective is urgent especially against the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic, it is necessary - to use Donna Haraway's words - “to stay with the trouble” in this infected time and deal with kinship systems among various species.
In particular, this video shows a panorama populated by symbiotic assemblages, infected surviving and migrant collaborative beings – artificial intelligences biofabricated - that wallow in a liminal environment between natural and artificial, between mineral and organic in which humanity ha reduced itself to a crystalline form.

Back up my memories from Citron | Lunardi on Vimeo.

Back up my memories is a reflection on the disquieting perspectives offered by cryopreservation. Is it possible to crystallize the brain? Can memories be frozen before death to be defrosted in the near future thanks to new scientific discoveries?
Back up my memories is about the fear of losing memory and therefore of dying. Recovering memories means to long for immortality.
So, the fear of losing memories will become the fear of losing data.
At the same time, the video imagines a future in which the infinite digitization and quantification of data has made information overloaded starting a process of crystallization.
And certainly the more we will be connected to machines that will keep us alive, the more we will be imprisoned inside a global crystalline structure of data, information and technology from which we will no longer be able to separate ourselves as it could mean accepting death.

Short CV
Citron Lunardi is a collaboration between two different personalities: Selene Citron (1986) passing from digital fabrication to performance and Luca Lunardi (1980) who works with video and writing. Citron is a performer and sculptor. Her research is based on the use of simple materials: plaster, argilla, resin, twine, iron. Her current artistic work focuses on digital fabrication and 3D printing. She is a sculpture teacher in Liceo Artistico "Selvatico" of Padua. Lunardi is a filmmaker specialized in scientific communication and documentary. His artist research explored some different areas (cinema, video art, science and animal studies). Their artworks take a critical view of social, political and cultural issues. Often they arise from a very urgent suggestion of the society's problems. This suggestion often becomes an artifact created by Citron, or sometimes a performance. At this point the object or the performative act becomes a subject that Lunardi develops in film language. We scrutinize established terms like nature, culture and technology, including their definitional boundaries. We draw up experimental and future-oriented scenarios to reflect upon the hybrid network between humans and their environment.
The artworks become a hybrid that mixes the pixel framework, the 3D print, the performance and the environment. A contamination that redraws the boundaries between the human and the post human, the analogical and the digital, the artificial and the natural. Their works have participated in national and international exhibitions. Our recent suggestions are the studies of the philosopher of science and pioneer cyborg feminist Donna Haraway who calls for an interspecies symbiosis.

#LandscapeBot
Bot (Twitterbot) that generates landscapes for internet through machine learning algorithms, computer vision and artificial intelligence, the final output is Twitter. These images are created from a open acces paintings database belonging to museum collections from MET (Metropolitan Museum of New York), the Chicago Art Institute and Museo del Prado. The bot identifies, analyzes and classifies different landscape elements (sky, vegetation, terrain and clouds) using machine learning algorithms and computer vision, to later recompose images that complete and reconfigure new landscapes, finally it is conjugated with 3D virtual territories. This project seeks to establish relationships and dialogues between the mass production of images, the information flow, art history and painting.
